Questions
from Project
Directors on
Reauthorization
March 18, 2008
Dear
Senior Corps
Project
Director, Staff,
and Friends:
We felt
it was
important to
send out a
follow-up to
yesterday's "Legislative
Update: One
Vote Makes a
Difference," due
to the number
of project
directors who
have asked
for more
specifics that can
be conveyed to their
Congressperson
regarding what
our Senior
Corps programs
have lost as a
result of the
no vote. One
project
director
asked: "Can
you please
explain how
this (failure
of
Reauthorization)
might now have
a negative
impact on our
programs?"
Among many other
positive changes
for Senior Corps
programs, the
GIVE Act would
have:
lowered
volunteer
age
eligibility
to 55 for
FGP and SCP,
raised
income
guidelines
to 200% and
allowed a
small number
of
volunteers
to serve who
were
slightly
over-income
to serve
without
displacing
low-income
FGP and SCP
volunteers,
considerably
improved
recompetition
language
(RSVP) in
the final
bill with
additional
funding for
RSVP
programs
exceeding
measurement
standards,
allowed
FGP, RSVP
and SCP
programs to
accept
donations which
is currently
prohibited.
For
additional
information on
reauthorization,
please refer to
previous monthly
NSCA Action Alerts
and Updates.
The
NSCA website, www.NSCAtogether.org,
has a link to help
you find your
legislators.
Please know that
NSCA will
continue to work
with Congress to
bring about much
needed changes
for Senior Corps
through
reauthorization.
Your calls and
faxes are
critical in this
ongoing process!
Sincerely,
The
NSCA Board of
Directors
