NSCA Recommendations to Obama Transition Team
|
|
NSCA was honored by its invitation to present recommendations for the first year of the new administration to the Obama Transition Team. Our recommendations conveyed our enthusiasm in working with the Obama Administration in addressing tomorrow's challenges through senior volunteerism. The NSCA document to the Obama Transition Team outlined:
- NSCA priorities in the GIVE Act,
- NSCA recommendations of CNCS programs and regulations,
- NSCA statements on the Serve America Act, and
- NSCA comments on the Obama Plan.
NSCA is invigorated by President-elect Obama's interest in creating a culture of service at every key life stage, and anticipates working with the new administration to expand Senior Corps programs and allow more older adult volunteers to participate in solving the problems facing our communities. Go to the members-only section of the NSCA website, www.NSCAtogether.org, for detailed information regarding NSCA's recommendations to the Obama Transition Team.

| NSCA Gains Support through Voices for National Service |
|
As a member of Voices for National Service (VNS), NSCA gains the support of a coalition of national and state organizations committed to expanding national service opportunities for all Americans. NSCA, along with other national groups, recently submitted Senior Corps reauthorization recommendations to VNS on the Domestic Volunteer Service Act. Those recommendations gaining unanimous support are currently being presented to our policy makers on Capitol Hill. The VNS recommendations include many of our own, but does not represent our position in its entirety. VNS is one avenue of advocacy that helps educate our nation's leaders and the public about Senior Corps' impact and potential. NSCA continues to advocate for additional provisions for expansion of Senior Corps programs.

| Recent NSCA Sign Ons |
|
As you know, NSCA continues to monitor and support other advocacy efforts that have far-reaching benefits to our Senior Corps programs and volunteers. This past month, NSCA:
- signed on to a letter sponsored by n4a on recommendations focusing on transportantion issues of critical importance to our nation's older adults. The recommendations focus on five primary goals: providing greater resources for federal programs supporting senior mobility; promoting greater coordination of transit and other human service programs; increasing funding for the National Center on Senior Transportation established under SAFETEA-LU; enhancing access to mobility management services for older adults; and providing greater incentives and support to volunteers who are essential to senior transportation programs.
- signed on to a letter from the ServiceNation coalition, Voices for National Service, and others to ask and encourage President-elect Obama and Congress to invest in service and the non-profit sector as part of the upcoming stimulus package. Through a strategic investment by Congress, the non-profit and service sector can do its part in supporting communities and people who are struggling.
- endorsed a policy that supports a Clean Energy Corps (CEC). The policy proposes the Clean Energy Corps as a combined service, training and job-creation effort to combat global warming, grow local and regional economies and demonstrate the equity and employment promise of the clean energy economy.

Presidential Inauguration Committee Announces "Renew America Together"
President-elect Obama is making a call to service to every American across the country to reignite the nation's spirit of volunteerism and community service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19th. This new effort, Renew America Together, is intended to be not just about stepping up to serve for a single day, but rather to make a continued commitment to serving communities throughout the year. To engage Americans in service, the Presidential Inauguration Committee has launched a new website website that enables Americans in every state to find a volunteer opportunity in their neighborhood, or to create and host an event on their own. Go to www.USAService.org to see this new, interactive website.
