RE:  Children of prisoners grant opportunity

NSCA has been afforded an opportunity by MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership to participate in a demonstration project designed to provide mentors to children of incarcerated parents. This opportunity may provide each qualified FGP/RSVP a $900 award (per child mentored) for each match initiated between March 1, 2008 through September 30, 2008.  All matches must be on-going for a minimum of 4 hours/month from inception through a 12-month continuous period.  A match is considered a pairing of an adult volunteer and a child aged 4-18 who has a parent in a state or federal prison system.  It is permissible for a volunteer to have more than one mentee. A limited number of grants are available.  A distribution formula will be decided based upon the number of applications.

To apply to participate in this project, MENTOR/NSCA outlines the following commitment of each program:

  • Be a current member of the National Senior Corps Association by 9/8/08
  • Commit to conduct a fingerprint background check ($25 special fee per volunteer) prior to December 31, 2008, for all mentors through the SafetyNet background check program (more details will follow)
  • Volunteers will participate in a 1.5 hour Skill Enhancement training focused on the latest research, practice and knowledge of working with children of prisoners (details to follow)
  • After October 1, 2008, additional funding may be available to NSCA members
